Detached process dump directory

Detailed Explanation The BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST specifies the pathname (either a directory, disk or ASM diskgroup) where trace files for background processes are located.
These trace files help you to debug these background processes, such as the Database Writer (DBWR), Log Writer (LGWR), Job queue processes.

It also contain the alert.log file.
This alert.log file - which includes the database System IDentifier of SID; alert_sid.log - contain all sort of information during the lifespan of an instance.
The most important database events and messages are logged here.
When you encounter for instance ORA-00600 or ORA-07445 messages, you first want to look in this file to find additional information.

As this file continues to grow during the life of a database, you might want to periodically archive messages in this file.

Starting as of Oracle 11g, this parameter will be replaced with diagnostic_dest in order to support the ADR (Automatic Diagnostic Repository) infrastructure.
